Pissed-Off About Happiness

By Gina Simmons, Ph.D. “I hate happy people,” said Mark, a former anger management client.  “I just want to punch them in the face.”  Mark wore his unhappiness with a hostile chip on his shoulder.  Unable to appreciate the joy in others, even the sweet innocence of a baby’s laughter, he consumed himself with bitter envy. Another [...]

Three Secrets of Forgiveness

By Gina Simmons, Ph.D. Heather wiped her tear-streaked face with tissue.  Memories of her father, who abandoned her as a child, still tormented her emotionally, two decades later.  As she moved through her home, vacuuming the living room and cleaning the kitchen, the tears ran down her cheeks.   Her husband Dan came home from work [...]

Lessons From Woodstock

By Jay Schneider, L.C.S.W. “Good morning!  What we have here is breakfast in bed for four hundred thousand.”  Hugh Romney (Wavy Gravy). The Woodstock Arts and Music Festival kicked off on August 15, 1969.  On a 600 acre dairy farm in the small town of Bethel, New York, attendees came to see 32 of the best musical [...]

Praise for the Angry Hero

By Gina Simmons, Ph.D. Covered from head to toe in modest garments, in the hot Sudanese sun, Lubna Hussein found herself arrested under “indecency” laws.  Wearing loose trousers that resembled a long skirt, Lubna, a Press Officer for the United Nations, found herself facing 40 lashes for wearing “indecent clothing.”  She sent out 500 invitations to [...]

Why Girls Should Be Tough and Boys Should Be Tender

By Gina Simmons, Ph.D. The excited new father gazes in at the hospital nursery with a huge smile of pride and joy.  “What will you name him?” asks a friendly nurse.  “Something strong, like John”, the father replies.  Before the baby boy gets his first diaper change the expectation for him to become strong and powerful [...]

Gina,
I have a sick child and will not be able to make it down to Mission Valley tonight.
Good luck.
Let me know how it goes and let's discuss having two groups, one for the south of town and I can head up one up here in CV.

Hi Gina,
I just checked the Meet Up page and I did post the next meet-up right after our last meeting but it's the last Thursday of every month, which this month is Thursday, October 29. You put this one at Thursday the 22d? This might cause some confusion.

Thanks Gina, I was out of town in Indianapolis, so things have been pretty crazy busy!
Let's chat about location when we meet and maybe do a san diego and north county group?

Sorry I missed your window, will try now. I take my kids to school during that time and then I went and had some Monday morning meditation and weekly planning overlooking the ocean :)

Sorry I haven't gotten back to you sooner. Things have been a little crazy. Can we talk via phone Monday about using your office on Thursday for our meeting??
I am available to talk in the morning if you are?
Thanks!

Inch by inch. This is my experience as well. I am going up to my brother's house in Napa the 26th to get away and just write. I need time to just have full focus so I am glad to have the support of my hubby to do this. I will be in Denver the later part of next week to give a class. Busy and loving it!

Thank you so much. I am glad you liked it. I don't write poetry often, and the things I am writing now are much too explicit to publish. :-)

I got back late last night from a trip to see family. I have been out in the boonies in Illinois--no internet and no consistent cell service for a week! But it was fun. Katie spent the week catching frogs and bugs, mudding in the river bottoms, and riding go carts. She kissed one of the frogs. I wished her luck with that, but my mother warned her that kisses turn frogs into princes only temporarily.

Songs of Angry Men

Last weekend we attended a youth theater performance of Les Miserables, the musical based on the novel by Victor Hugo. In The People’s Song the chorus sings, “Do you hear the people sing, singing the songs of angry men? It is the music of the people who will not be slaves again.” It reminded me of many in the United States and across the world who join in groups to fight oppre… Continue
